Replaced the kidney grills on my M5 last night. That was the only chrome item on the car so I finally replaced it with some "piano black" (gloss) kidney grills. I thought the matte black option was a bit more M3-racer. Glossy is a bit more refined for the M5, right?

Damn it Kinja! Hopefully the image eventually shows up, as it's there in the editing window. Honestly, they need to fire all their programmers.

I love the black grilles on the blue/red cars. Nice!

Derek's kidneys look really nice.

How hard was it? I've been temped to do it myself but I think black kidneys and black car is too much. I'm tempted to do the slats in chrome and the frame in black though.

That was my first thought. "Where's the kidney harvester when we need him?"

Looks good! I have the "M3 Edition" OEM black chrome (gloss) grilles on my E90. I think the gloss always looks better than the matte, regardless of "racer" status.

I hear lots of stories about people breaking the tabs pulling them out, due to the plastic getting brittle. I managed to lose one myself, but nothing catastrophic if I want to put the OE set back in.

Pretty much pop the hood and pull up all the tabs on the inside with a flathead screwdriver. There are two top and bottom, one on each side. You'll have to wiggle the slats out (towards the engine-side) while you work on each tab.

If you end up pulling your stock ones and painting the frames, do what you can to take off the chrome and paint with several layers of paint. The biggest complaint is that you'll get some chips and they'll be really noticeable with the chrome showing through. Mine (and most of the matte ones you can buy) are black plastic so chips won't be too bad.

I'd say it depends on your personal taste and what direction you're going with the car for gloss vs. matte. Matte I think of for the race car or street car you want to look like a race car. Gloss, a bit more classy.

You should do this! (in reference to the ///M Racing colors on the grille)

Somewhere, there's another BMW laying in a bathtub full of ice, just waking up to read the worst note it will ever read.

I can't see your image right now, but I know what you're talking about.

I've considered it, but I'm not sure I like how it looks on a blue (or red) car. The blue stripe just gets so lost on a blue car. I think this would be prefect on a white M3!

Especially since it's missing both kidneys.

I did black inserts with paint-matched surrounds on my 3. Not bad.

Nice. I thought about doing that when I got my E60, but the car's silver, and I think it'd just make the grilles look too damn big on that nose.
